| 20 November 2009 The International Energy Agency (IEA) presented the results of its World Energy Outlook 2009 at this special Energy Forum event. During his presentation, IEA Deputy Executive Director Richard Jones provided a comprehensive update of energy demand and supply projections and their implications for energy security and the environment. This latest analysis from the IEA takes into account the dramatic economic downturn that has now hit all parts of the world, as well as revised expectations about energy prices, which have ridden a veritable roller coaster over the past year. As part of the presentation, Jones outlined the results of an in-depth assessment of the prospects for global gas markets, including the emergence of shale gas as an abundant and potentially low-cost source of supply in North America. He also presented a post-2012 scenario, which the IEA prepared as input to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change negotiations, which details a pathway for the energy sector to achieve a transition to a low-carbon world. | 19 November 2009 IEA Chief Economist Fatih Birol presented the results of the World Energy Outlook 2009 (WEO 2009) in Oslo on 17 November. The conference was held at Statoil's Autumn Conference with 650 participants. In his introductory remarks, Norway’s Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Terje Riis-Johansen said: “This year’s World Energy Outlook visualises how critical the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen will be: If no agreement is reached in December, IEAs analysis estimates that the cost for the world will be enormous: to quote directly from the World Energy Outlook: it will cost us 500 billions US Dollar – a year”. | IEA Chief Economist Given Top German Honor | |
| 19 November 2009 The Chief Economist of the IEA, Dr. Fatih Birol, has received the Federal cross of Merit (Bundesverdienstkreuz/Verdienstkreuz 1. Klasse), the only general state decoration of the Federal Republic of Germany. In a ceremony at the German Ministry of Economy (BMWI) in Berlin, States Secretary Jochen Homann, acknowledged Dr. Birol’s “outstanding work” on economic analyses. He particularly praised the IEA flagship publication World Energy Outlook, which is designed and directed by Dr. Birol, for its “comprehensive, timely and independent view” and said the study had become an important reference for the German energy and climate policy. | World Energy Outlook 2009 presentations in Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan | |
| 17 November 2009 Deputy Executive Director Ambassador Richard H. Jones brought the IEA’s World Energy Outlook 2009 (WEO) to two countries of the Caspian region that are playing an increasingly important role in international energy markets. He spoke in Baku, Azerbaijan on 17 November at the invitation of the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy (see picture, together with Mr Fariz Ismailzade, Director of the Advanced Foreign Service Programme) and gave two further presentations in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan on 18 November that focused on the gas and electricity sectors, respectively. The first was at the 14th Turkmenistan International Oil and Gas Conference, during which Ambassador Jones reviewed WEO findings on current trends in natural gas markets and the role gas will play in the future energy mix; the second was at a meeting of a Task Force for Regional Electricity Cooperation in Central and Southern Asia. While in the Caspian region, Ambassador Jones had the opportunity to discuss the WEO and regional energy developments in more detail with senior policymakers, including Minister of Industry and Energy of Azerbaijan Natiq Aliyev, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov and the Head of the State Statistics Committee Arif Valiyev, and in Turkmenistan the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Baymurad Khodjamukhamedov and the recently appointed Minister of Oil and Gas Oraznur Nurmyradov. | World Energy Outlook 2009 presented in Singapore, Jakarta and Bangkok | |
| 16 November 2009 IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka presented the results of the World Energy Outlook 2009 to an audience of 400 people in Singapore on 16 November as one of the main events at the Singapore International Energy Week, in Jakarta, Indonesia, on 18 November, and in Bangkok, Thailand, on 20 November. Mr Tanaka highlighted energy prospects in the ASEAN region, which is one of the focal points of the WEO 2009, and stressed that continued energy co-operation in ASEAN will improve energy security, economic development and environmental protection. While in Singapore, Mr. Tanaka met with Mr. S. Iswaran, Senior Minister of State, Trade and Industry, in Indonesia, with Dr. Darwin Zahedi Saleh, Indonesia’s new Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, and with Dr. Wannarat Channukul, Thailand’s Minister for Energy. In opening the Indonesian WEO-2009 presentation, Dr. Darwin stated that Indonesia is addressing the challenge of changing its energy mix by utilising renewable energy and focusing on energy efficiency. The Minister also noted that the WEO serves as an important guide for planning future energy policies and strategies, and welcomed stronger co-operation with the IEA. There was similar sentiment from Minister Wannarat of Thailand. Minister Wannarat echoed concerns over energy security and the environment and Thailand’s need to emphasise renewable energy, market pricing, and energy efficiency. He welcomed the mature and close co-operation with the IEA. |

| 13 November 2009 IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka and Chief Economist Fatih Birol presented the results of the World Energy Outlook 2009 (WEO 2009) at the European Commission in Brussels on 13 November. In opening the event, EU Commissioner Piebalgs highlighted the importance of the WEO as a reference for EU energy policy. He also noted that the WEO-2009 shows a way to transform the energy sector compatible with a 450 ppm path and that he considers the analysis in the WEO to be fully independent. | 11 November 2009 IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka and Chief Economist Fatih Birol presented the results of the World Energy Outlook 2009 (WEO 2009) in Copenhagen on 11 November. Connie Hedegaard, Minister of Climate and Energy of Denmark, who hosted the meeting, said that the WEO 2009 serves as extremely useful input to the upcoming COP meeting in Copenhagen, because it sets out a means to transform the energy sector with clear analysis on power generation, the transportation sector and energy production, among other areas. She also thanked Mr. Tanaka for channelling the IEA's efforts, as shown in the WEO 2009, to address climate change issues in a detailed and rigorous manner, since taking office two years ago. | 10 November 2009 At a press conference in London on Tuesday, 10 November, the IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka and Chief Economist Fatih Birol presented the results of the World Energy Outlook 2009 (WEO). The WEO 2009 looks at the impact of the economic downturn on energy use, CO2 emissions and energy investment and what will be required at the UN climate conference in Copenhagen to put together an agreement that stops global temperatures rising at a price that is affordable. The WEO also focuses on the natural gas resource base, current trends and the role gas will play in the future energy mix. | IEA Participates in World Policy Conference |
| 1 November 2009 Dr. Richard Bradley, head of the IEA Energy Efficiency and Environment division, participated in the second annual World Policy Conference was held in Marrakech, Morocco from 30 October to 1 November. The conference focussed on issues of economic, security and climate change governance in a changing world. Dr. Bradley’s presentation (see link) emphasised the importance of incentives for investment in cleaner technologies, increased R&D in energy technologies and greater international policy co-operation and co-ordination. Over 160 Ministers, former ministers, parliamentians and senior executives from the private sector participated. Two former heads of state: Nambaryn Enkhbayer of Mongolia and Han Seung-Soo of South Korea were speakers. See presentation |

| 28 October 2009 IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka led a team of IEA staff on a mission to Moscow from 26-28 October. Mr. Tanaka gave presentations at International Energy Week and also at the International Oil Conference, at the invitation of the Russian government. He also met with Russian Minister of Energy, Mr. Sergei Shmatko, to discuss the growing areas of IEA-Russia cooperation. Among other activities, the IEA co-hosted a workshop on energy efficiency with the Russian Ministry of Energy and took part in the International Cement Forum. | Transport, Energy and CO2: Moving Toward Sustainability | |
| 27 October 2009 Transport accounts for one-quarter of global energy use and energy-related CO2 emissions. To achieve the necessary deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, transport must play a significant role. However, without strong global action, car ownership worldwide is set to triple to over two billion by 2050. Trucking activity will double and air travel could increase four-fold. These trends will lead to a doubling of transport energy use, with an even higher growth rate in CO2 emissions as the planet shifts toward high-CO2 synthetic fuels. How can we enable mobility without accelerating climate change? Transport, Energy and CO2: Moving Toward Sustainability provides answers to this question. It finds that if we change the way we travel, adopt technologies to improve vehicle efficiency and shift to low-CO2 fuels, we can move onto a different pathway where transport CO2 emissions by 2050 are far below current levels, at costs that are lower than many assume. The report discusses the prospects for shifting more travel to the most efficient modes and reducing travel growth rates, improving vehicle fuel efficiency by up to 50% using cost-effective, incremental technologies, and moving toward electricity, hydrogen, and advanced biofuels to achieve a more secure and sustainable transport future. If governments implement strong policies to achieve this scenario, transport can play its role and dramatically reduce CO2 emissions by 2050. This publication is one of three new IEA end-use studies, together with industry and buildings, which look at the role of technologies and policies in transforming the way energy is used in these sectors. | First IEA-Indonesia Energy Statisticians Training Project Course Held in Paris | |
| 26 October 2009 The nascent IEA Energy Training and Capacity-Building Programme launched its inaugural project this week. 21 Indonesian energy statisticians from government and industry, joined by 1 Ghanaian energy statistician, came to Paris for a week-long IEA-Indonesia Energy Statisticians Training Course, 26-30 October. This is the first course in the IEA-Indonesia Energy Statisticians Training Project and it addressed international conventions for definitions, formats and methodologies for general energy statistics and energy balances. The Course was a success; its hands-on focus allowed exchanges of information and building of contact between Indonesian officials and industry, and further developed the accurate and timely data flow between Indonesia and the IEA. | IEA Launches Energy Policy Review of Chile | |
| 22 October 2009 On Thursday 22 October, IEA Executive Director, Nobuo Tanaka, launched the Chile Energy Policy Review 2009 in Santiago, making a presentation on “Global Energy Challenges: Insights from recent IEA analysis.” The event was attended by 150 people representing government, academia, business and the main Chilean media. Earlier that day, Mr. Tanaka participated in the inauguration of the LNG terminal in Quintero, 120 km north of Santiago, which marks the end of Chilean dependence on Argentine natural gas, and met with Chile's President, Ms. Michelle Bachelet.
