IEA, OPEC, OECD and World Bank cooperate on G20 Energy Subsidy Agenda
18 February 2010 On 18 February a workshop was held at IEA Headquarters in response to the request from G20 Leaders to the IEA, OPEC, OECD and World Bank to produce a Joint Report aimed at providing "analysis of the scope of energy subsidies and suggestions for the implementation" of the G20 initiative to "rationalize and phase out over the medium term inefficient fossil fuel subsidies that encourage wasteful consumption". The workshop sought views and information from stakeholders with expertise in the field of energy subsidies to help shape the key findings and messages of the Joint Report to the G20.

Reinforcing IEA-Partner Country relationships with Indonesia and Thailand
4 February 2010 Ulrich Benterbusch, Director of the IEA Directorate of Global Energy Dialogue, and Brett Jacobs, SE Asia Programmes Manager, met in Bangkok and Jakarta with Dr Wannarat Channukul, Minister of Energy of Thailand, and senior energy officials of Indonesia and Thailand. The IEA and Indonesia and Thailand have developed practical, outcome-orientated bilateral work programmes. Discussions focused on the developing programmes and their next steps for project activities in 2010 and 2011.

 

Impact of Financial Crisis on Oil and Gas Sectors
4 February 2010 Dr. Fatih Birol, IEA Chief Economist, took part in the Troika Russia 2010 Forum in Moscow on 4 February. He participated in two panel discussions focussed on oil and gas markets and the impact of the financial crisis alongsidehigh level officials from GazpromExport, Novatek, TNK-BP, Rosneft, the Russian Academy of Science as well as world renowned energy experts such as Daniel Yergin and Ed Morse.

Chief Technology Officers convene at IEA
2 February 2010 Chief Technology Officers (see photo) from 30 leading global companies met with IEA officials in Paris to discuss how technology business leaders and governments can work together to develop and deploy low-carbon energy technologies through enhanced international collaboration. Other topics focused on how business can be more involved in: the implementation of IEA technology roadmaps; the collection of key policy recommendations for policymakers; and broader participation in the IEA energy technology network. IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka opened the meeting along with Bjorn Stigson, President of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and David Eyton, Group Head of Research and Technology at BP.

IEA launches Energy Business Council website
1 February 2010 Following the establishment of the Energy Business Council (EBC), IEA is pleased to announce the set up of a new dedicated website. EBC is an executive-level group that represents a wide variety of companies involved in different aspects of energy exploration, production, transformation and consumption. Energy Efficiency Focus at IEA
28 January 2010 Delegates from 25 IEA member countries and the European Commission attended the Energy Efficiency Working Party (EEWP) meeting held at the IEA on 28-29 January. Delegates discussed a range of topics including changes in energy efficiency policy since the last meeting in September 2009, and proposals for future IEA energy efficiency projects. IEA to host oil industry forum in Tokyo with IEEJ and METI
28 January 2010 On 25-26 February 2010, the IEA will be jointly hosting with the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ) and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) an oil industry forum in Tokyo. The two-day event will include a workshop on oil market volatility and a conference on a broad range of oil market topics. The workshop (under the Chatham House Rule) will examine key oil price drivers and the causes of price volatility as well as measures to enhance market stability. It is the third in an occasional series of workshops looking at oil price formation, with previous events held in 2004 and 2008. The 2nd day will feature an open conference on oil market challenges, organised by IEEJ and METI.

IEA Executive Director Participates in the World Economic Forum in Davos
28 January 2010 On 28-30 January, IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka travelled to Davos, Switzerland to speak in high-level panels and participate in discussions on energy, economic and climate change matters. Some of the issues he addressed included Copenhagen, renewables, nuclear power and carbon capture and storage (CCS). IEA Executive Director Speaks at Japan Cooperation Center, Petroleum Symposium
27 January 2010 IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka delivered a keynote presentation in Japanese to an audience of 300 oil business people at the symposium "Innovation of Technology and Management in Oil Downstream" organised by Japan Cooperation Center, Petroleum (JCCP) in Tokyo on 27 January. The presentation provided the big picture of energy security and sustainability to the audience and facilitated the following discussion. The representatives of oil downstream industries from Asia, Middle East and Africa exchanged views and best practices with focus on innovation of management and technology.

IEA discusses broadening ties with Brazil
26 January 2010 IEA Deputy Executive Director Richard Jones met with Brazilian Energy Vice Minister Márcio Zimmermann (see photo) on Thursday, 14 January, in Brasilia, to discuss existing and potential future areas of collaboration between the IEA and the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), including renewable energy, energy technology roadmaps (in particular sustainable biofuels and smart grids), and reinforcing data exchanges on Brazil’s energy sector in general. Amb. Jones also met with Minister do Lago, Head of the Energy Department at the Ministry of External Relations and with the World Bank Country Director, Makhtar Diop. On Friday, 15 January, Amb. Jones gave a presentation on the World Energy Outlook 2009 to a large audience comprising government officials, academia and the private sector, among others. The presentation was hosted by the Electricity Research Center of Eletrobrás (CEPEL). In Rio de Janeiro, he also delivered a presentation to Petrobras Business Committee.

EU joins International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation (IPEEC)
26 January 2010 Ambassador Cristina Narbona Ruiz of Spain signed the Terms of Reference for the International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation (IPEEC) and IPEEC Memorandum with the IEA which is the host for the IPEEC Secretariat. In so doing, the European Union officially joins IPEEC. The signing occurred on 26 January 2009 during the 2nd IPEEC Executive Committee which was held at IEA Headquarters in Paris.

Assessing role of Arctic oil and gas in global energy
26 January 2010 IEA Director of Sustainable Energy Policy and Technology Bo Diczfalusy participated in the “Arctic Frontiers” conference in Tromsoe, Norway. He made a presentation entitled “Arctic Oil and Gas in the Global Energy Picture.” The high-level audience included politicians, business, researchers and NGOs from the Arctic region.

IEA at World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi
20 January 2010 IEA Deputy Executive Director Richard Jones spoke at the World Future Energy Summit which took place in Abu Dhabi on 18-20 January 18-20. Government officials, policymakers, experts and investors from nearly 100 countries participated in the conference, which sought to identify real solutions for today's climate change and energy challenges. Amb. Jones was a panellist in the session, “What now after Copenhagen?” ( click here for presentation). He also chaired the session on Future Climate Investment Structures and was invited to join a panel on International Climate Change Policy and Action Plans , chaired by Sir Nicholas Stern.

Potential for closer IEA co-operation with Mexico
19 January 2010 IEA Deputy Executive Director Richard Jones met with Mexican Energy Secretary Georgina Kessel Martinez on Tuesday, 12 January, in Mexico City to discuss existing and potential future areas of collaboration between the IEA and the Mexican energy ministry (SENER), including energy statistics, energy efficiency indicators, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and the upcoming International Energy Forum Ministerial meeting in Cancun (29-31 March). Amb. Jones then gave a presentation on the World Energy Outlook 2009 to a large audience comprising officials from SENER, the state oil and gas company (PEMEX), the Mexican state owned utility (CFE), the regulatory agency (CRE), and representatives from embassies, among others.

Mr. Tanaka talks with EU energy business leaders and climbs the largest solar tower
15 January 2010 IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka delivered a keynote presentation at the EU energy business leaders meeting, "Energy Sustainability Policies: The European Challenge," in Seville, Spain on 14 January. Mr. Tanaka’s presentation covered a wide range of issues, including the IEA’s 450 ppm climate scenario, implications of COP 15 and the IEA’s energy technology roadmaps. The leaders discussed various issues including energy supply security, renewable energy, and reported the results to Mr. Miguel Sebastián, the Spanish Minister of Industry, Tourism and Trade, who is also the current chairman of the energy ministers' meeting (Energy Council) of the European Union. While in Spain, Mr. Tanaka also visited the Abengoa Solar's PS20, a 20 MW concentrating solar power plant (CSP).
