23 June 2009 Speaking at the Renewable Energy Finance Forum in New York City, IEA Executive Director, Mr. Nobuo Tanaka, said that renewable energy sources have a key role to play with respect to both energy security and climate change, but that both challenges are being overshadowed by the current economic crisis. Closer IEA Energy Co-operation with Indonesia | |
18 June 2009 The Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) and the IEA have agreed to work closely in tackling common energy challenges. The MEMR and the IEA signed a letter of intent to initiate a bilateral programme of work (PoW) and foster two-way exchange of information and data. Dialogue between the IEA and MEMR on energy issues started in 2006, culminating in the IEA "Energy Policy Review of Indonesia 2008" that was released late in 2008. IEA to Host New Energy Efficiency Secretariat | |
17 June 2009 The IEA Governing Board on 17 June approved the hosting by the IEA of the secretariat of the International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation (IPEEC). On 18 June, IEA Deputy Executive Director, Ambassador Richard Jones, signed the memorandum relating to that hosting in the presence of IEA Executive Director, Mr. Nobuo Tanaka and Mr. Keisuke Sadamori, Counsellor for International Energy Negotiation, METI, Japan. Energy Technology Transition Project Launch | |
13 June 2009 The IEA held together with Energy Research Institute (ERI) a workshop to launch the China Energy Technology Transitions project. The project funded by the UK government, will help build capacity on energy technology modelling, scenario analysis and roadmaps for China. It will feed into ETP 2010 and the IEA’s international roadmaps project. Ambassador Jones (pictured above) offered a welcome address and other IEA participants included Peter Taylor, Cecilia Tam, Keith Burnard and Julie Jiang. The Chinese government expressed their support for this project and shared their views on the need for greater international collaboration to promote low carbon technologies. Thailand-IEA Joint Emergency Response Exercise, Bangkok | |
18 May 2009 The Ministry of Energy of Thailand and the IEA are holding a Joint Emergency Response Exercise (ERE), in Bangkok, on 18-19 May 2009. This is the first ERE that the IEA has jointly held with a specific country, and it is also the first time that the IEA has held an ERE outside of its Paris Headquarters. This reflects the strong bilateral relationship between the IEA and Thailand and Thailand’s interest to better establish its national oil and gas emergency response mechanisms. read more… |
IEA Welcomes Creation of IPEEC |
14 May 2009 On 24 May on the margins of the G8 Energy Ministers meeting in Rome, twelve countries signed the terms of reference to establish the International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Co-operation (IPEEC). This new high-level forum will work globally to promote actions that bring high gains in energy efficiency. IEA Submission to US Senate on Creation of Oil Product Reserve |
12 May 2009 The US Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee held a hearing on 12 May about creating a product reserve in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. 28 April 2009 The IEA took part in a number of events at the EE Global Energy Efficiency Global Forum and Exposition in Paris on 27-29 April. Head of the IEA Energy Efficiency and Environment (EED) Division, Rick Bradley, moderated an Executive Dialogue session on Industry and Utilities: Driving Energy Efficiency Economy-wide through Public Policy. IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka was invited to speak in the closing session dedicated to "What is the Real Potential for Energy Efficiency?" The IEA also organised a publications stand, highlighting recent work on energy efficiency and other energy-related issues. 20 April 2009 IEA Launches Clean Coal Study in Beijing 20 April The IEA launched its latest publication, Cleaner Coal in China, in Beijing on 20 April. IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka noted that China’s coal sector has made remarkable progress over the last decade, fuelling rapid economic growth and bringing a better quality of life for China’s citizens. Yet China and other coal-using nations, despite progress, face persistent difficulties in using coal more cleanly. “The speed and scale of China’s expanding coal use have brought a new urgency to deploying the full range of clean coal technologies...” said Mr. Tanaka. “China already has most of the technologies the world has to offer.
