European Business Summit in Brussels
27 March 2009 On 27 March, IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka took part in the European Business Summit in Brussels. He took part in a panel discussion entitled ‘The Last Energy Crisis?’. Others on the panel were EU Energy Commissioner Piebalgs, Vagit Alekperov (President, Lukoil), Rob Franklin (Vice President Production, ExxonMobil), Jaroslav Mil (SPCR, Czech Confederation of Industry) and Dr. Erkut Yucaoglu (Chairman & CEO Maps AS; former President of TUSAID). In his speech, Mr Tanaka outlined how the IEA was borne of the first energy crisis of 1973-74, explaining that measures to mitigate climate change can enhance energy security.

Global Energy Governance
26 March 2009 IEA Deputy Executive Director Richard Jones participated at the “Global Energy Governance” conference at the French Institute of International Relations (Ifri) in Paris. The discussion focused on the main international organisations and processes in place involved in energy governance: OPEC, the IEA, the International Energy Forum Secretariat (IEF) and the Energy Charter.

 

Italian Environment Minister Visits IEA
25 March 2009 IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka met with Italian Environment Minister Stefania Prestigiacomo on 25 March at IEA headquarters in Paris. Amongst other matters, they discussed the upcoming G8 Environment Ministers’ Meeting in Sicily (22-24 April) as well as the IEA alternative energy scenarios for lower CO2 emissions, as outlined in the World Energy Outlook 2008.
IEA Assesses Luxembourg Energy Policies
20 March 2009 IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka travelled to Luxembourg for the launch of the IEA publication, Energy Policies of Luxembourg 2008. The book, which commended the country for progress since the past in-depth policy review in 2005, highlighted some of the current energy challenges Luxembourg faces as it strives to climate and energy security objectives. Mr. Tanaka is pictured with Hon. Jeannot Krecké, Luxembourg’s Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade in the photo attached.

IEA emphasises need for investment at OPEC Seminar
18 March 2009 The IEA Executive Director spoke today at the OPEC International Seminar in Vienna (pictured). He outlined the IEA’s view on world energy markets, underscoring the need for investments both today and in the longer term with respect to both the traditional supply side and also clean energy technologies.

China's Energy Future
18 March 2009 On 18 March, IEA Deputy Executive Director Richard Jones participated in the 2009 China International Summit Forum on Energy Saving, Emissions Reduction and New Energy Science and Technology.  He is pictured here with Minister of Science and Technology WAN Gang in a roundtable discussion among key speakers at the summit, which took place in the Great Hall of the People.  Amb. Jones made a keynote speech on "The Long March to a Better Future for ALL -- Developing and Deploying Revolutionary Energy Technologies."

European Wind Energy Conference 2009
16 March 2009 On 16 March, Mr. Tanaka attended the EWEC 2009 in Marseille, France. He gave a speech in the opening session on the global energy outlook, emphasising that wind power has a key role to play with respect to climate change mitigation and energy security. Here he is pictured touring the EWEC exhibition with EC Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs, Mathilde Rothe (Vice President of the European Parliament), Arthouros Zervos (EWEA President) and Roland Sunden (CEO of LM Glasfiber).

IEA Participates in Launch of Global Fuel Economy Initiative
4 March 2009 IEA Executive Director Tanaka participated in the launch of the Global Fuel Economy Initiative (GFEI) in Geneva, during the Geneva Motor Show. Four organisations -- the FIA Foundation, International Transport Forum (ITF) and UN Environment Program and IEA -- developed GFEI to achieve a 50% reduction in automobile energy use per klometre by 2050. Energy and Society Conference, Portugal
27 February 2009 On 27 February, IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka met with the Portuguese Minister for Economy and Industry, Mr. Manuel Pinho. Mr. Tanaka visited Lisbon, Portugal to speak at the inaugural Energy and Society Conference. His speech provided an overview of the global energy outlook and insights into the important role of renewables with respect to climate change mitigation and energy security.

Korea's Role in a "Reshaping World"
24 February 2009 On 22-23 February, IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka visited Korea and participated in a conference, "Global Korea 2009 -- Korea in a Reshaping World." Mr. Tanaka made a presentation focusing on international energy co-operation and sustainable economic growth. He stressed the importance of the investment for energy supply and clean energy technologies, international cooperation for energy efficiency and clean energy technology diffusion and a clean energy new deal as an urgent action.
